All shocks are measured center-of-eyelet to center-of-eyelet. Before installing shocks of non‑OEM length, confirm wheel travel and clearance to avoid contact with the swingarm, exhaust, chain/belt guard, or tire.

When installing shocks on '86-'15 XL models it may be necessary to modify or space the chain/belt guard for proper clearance.

A shock slightly longer than stock can alter head angle toward quicker steering; a slightly shorter unit can yield somewhat slower steering.

For bikes operated near the manufacturer's maximum load rating more than half the time, consider the appropriate specification.
