When installing on '86-'15 XL models it may be necessary to modify or space the chain/belt guard to allow proper clearance. A shock slightly longer than stock can alter head angle for quicker steering; a slightly shorter shock can provide somewhat slower steering. Before purchasing or attempting to install shocks that differ from OEM length, confirm that wheel travel can be altered without causing clearance issues such as swingarm/axle to exhaust contact, chain/belt guard contact, or tire contact.
